5 activities near Benidorm for a family trip with children
Light, the Mediterranean, and family. The Costa Blanca, specifically Benidorm and its surroundings, are undoubtedly destinations that come to mind when we think of these qualities. With pleasant weather year-round thanks to its geographical location, it is, according to the World Health Organization, one of the healthiest areas in the world, boasting around 320 sunny days per year and temperatures typically ranging between 16ºC and 28ºC. Can you think of a better destination to enjoy with children year-round and experience a family vacation you’ll remember forever?
We can assure you that traveling to Alicante is a delight. We live here and love sharing our Mediterranean lifestyle with you.
If you’re visiting with your family, we have some leisure plans to recommend so you can complete your trip to Benidorm, filling it with unique experiences. This way, both kids and adults can enjoy unforgettable moments together as a family.

PEACEFUL COVES FOR A FAMILY DAY OF RELAXATION
The beaches and coves of Benidorm and its surroundings are known for their fine golden sand, clear and transparent waters, and their clean, well-maintained appearance throughout the year. In fact, three of them were awarded the prestigious Blue Flag certification in 2021, granted to beaches that meet strict quality standards, including cleanliness, accessibility, and services, among others. These beaches (Playa de Levante, Playa de Poniente, and Cala del Mal Pas) are the most well-known in Benidorm and where most visitors choose to spend their sunny beach days, offering ample play areas for children, among many other services.
However, if you’re looking for a day of relaxation and want to enjoy a quiet, secluded swim with your family, Benidorm offers nearby coves that will have you instantly switching to “airplane mode.”
Cala del Tio Ximo, one of the lesser-known spots in the area, is a perfect option to escape the hustle and bustle of the city’s larger beaches and enjoy family activities like snorkeling. Although it is quite small and peaceful, it has a lifeguard station to ensure the safety of both adults and children.
Cala Almadrava, just over 100 meters long, features a mix of rocks and fine sand. Its atmosphere invites tranquility and relaxation, and its clear waters are ideal for snorkeling. In recent years, it has become a favorite choice for those looking to disconnect from the city.
HIKING ROUTES IN SERRA GELADA TO CONNECT WITH NATURE
The Serra Gelada Natural Park spans a total of 5,653.92 hectares covering the municipalities of Benidorm, Alfaz del Pi, and Altea. It protects the entire mountain range and three iconic islets in the area, making it one of the best options near Benidorm for a family-friendly nature activity.
Although summer is not the most recommended season for hiking or cycling in the mountains due to the weather, early in the morning or at sunset, there are some very interesting spots to visit with your family if you want to experience a connection with nature and admire unique Mediterranean landscapes.
One route we recommend, as it is perfect for the whole family, is the Route to the Albir Lighthouse. To access it, you’ll find free parking near the entrance where you can leave your car and begin the adventure (during peak visitor times, it’s advisable to park near El Albir Beach in the town of Alfaz del Pi and walk less than a kilometer to the entrance). The trail for this route is completely paved, as it is the former road to the lighthouse, now closed to traffic. This makes it ideal for walking with children, cycling, or even bringing strollers.

During the route, you can enjoy the magnificent views of Benidorm and part of the Costa Blanca from various viewpoints. You can also visit the cave of “Boca Balena”, the ochre mines, and the remains of their Phoenician-origin installations.
Everyone will enjoy the route like children!

SWEET MOMENT: VILLAJOYOSA AND ITS CHOCOLATE MUSEUM
Villajoyosa, a town located just a few kilometers south of Benidorm, is a picturesque place with its colorful houses nestled in its old quarter, which are undoubtedly its hallmark. A visit to Villajoyosa, or La Vila, will not only let you explore its distinctive houses and beaches but also one of its most popular tourist attractions: the Valor Chocolate Museum.
An unforgettable experience for the sweet-tooths in the family (both young and old)!
The Valor Chocolate Museum was established in 1998 in Villajoyosa and was recognized in 2008 by the Generalitat Valenciana as the Valencian Museum of Chocolate. The building that houses the museum was once the small family factory of Valor. Here, you’ll learn about the chocolate-making process and the history of these chocolates, spanning from their inception to the present, through five generations of master chocolatiers who have led the company. Additionally, it features one of the best collections of chocolate industry machinery.
At the end of the (free) museum tour, visitors can purchase factory products in the shop, and both children and adults can taste the variety of chocolates whose production process they just learned about in the factory.
WILDLIFE AT SAFARI AITANA
Approximately 40 kilometers from Benidorm and at an altitude of 1,000 meters lies Safari Aitana, a wildlife reserve home to animals from five continents, spanning more than 1,500,000 m².
It boasts the unique appeal of being the only safari in the Valencian Community where visits are conducted like a real African safari: by car. This is the best way to observe animals in their natural habitat or semi-freedom, as is the case here. Both children and adults will have the opportunity to learn more about the life and natural behaviors of these fascinating creatures.
The safari visit can be experienced in various ways: as part of a group, led by a staff member driving a safari vehicle; independently, allowing you to enjoy the animals at your own pace; or on a private tour, the ideal option for those looking to share a special day with their family, as this includes an exclusive guide just for you.
In addition to the visit, at Safari Aitana you can sponsor one of the animals in the reserve to help ensure their food and veterinary care.
